The 26th running of the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot took place on a sunny Thanksgiving morning. About 20,000 participants gathered at Auditorium Shores for the start on the First Street bridge. Most of the 20,000 runners signed up for the untimed 5 miler and many did the 1 mile walk or the kid’s K.
For the timed 5 miler, 3,600 runners took on the hilly course up La Vaca, over on 15th and Enfield, then back down to Cesar Chavez and the finish on Riverside. The men’s winner was Brody Roush in 26:01, 5:12 pace. Close behind were Rory Tunningly and Lorin Wilson. The first woman was Alison Macsas, in 28:17, followed by Lennie Waite and Chris Kimbrough. Masters winners were Andy Albright and Chris Kimbrough. Gordon Alexander continued his string of great results with a 31:05, winning his 55-59 age group. He also won masters or his age group in the RFTW 10 mile and the Run for the Heroes 5K in the last month.
A recent Runner’s World article has a list of the biggest Turkey Trots, but ThunderCloud isn’t mentioned, perhaps because many of the runners chose the untimed event. In any case, it’s one of the biggest area races and the main beneficiary is Caritas of Austin. 100% of the proceeds from the events go to Caritas, a nonprofit organization that provides housing, employment, education, and food services to more than 20,000 homeless, working poor, and documented refugees in Travis County. The ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot has donated over $3M to Caritas in the past 25 years.
