Wild Hare
Nearly 400 runners drove out to Warda for the Wild Hare races by Tejas Trails. This is the seventh year for this race and, atypically, the weather was perfect. The 50 milers started in the dark at 6am in the mid-30s. By the time the 50K, 25K, and 10K runners were on the course, it had warmed up into the 50s with bright skies and no humidity.
Anthony Jacobs dominated the 50 miler, running strong from the start, with a time of 6:50:54. That’s an average pace of 8:12 and just 21 seconds slower than the course record set by Steven Moore in 2013. Eloy Gonzalez and Michael Lee also placed. Julie Koepke was the women’s winner in 9:33, followed by Robin Phelps and Elzbieta McMurtrie-Jayaram. Thomas Bowling and Paula Adams were the masters winners.
The TrailRoots group was well-represented. Coach Erik had a crew working the aid station. Anthony Jacobs won the 50 mile. Dan Hannon finished the 50K for his first ultra, placing 13th. Bliss Pak also ran the 50K, placing 9th. Ed Remaley was 15th in the 25K. I was 5th in the 25K.
Shiner Beer Run
Over 800 people, including at least 80 from the Austin area, ran the annual 5K in Shiner. Jen Harney of Rogue, masquerading as Natalie Dean, won the overall in 18:40. The first guy was Brad Pesek in 20:08.

Back The Track. This group is raising money to improve the Austin High track. We all use it, so chip in.
Interesting news and articles from outside of Austin
Another race, another Jim Walmsley record. Just a couple weeks after his remarkable FKT on the double Grand Canyon crossing, Jim set a new course record at the JFK 50 miler in Williamsport, Virginia. His time of 5:21 was a record by 13 minutes over the effort of Max King in 2012. That’s 6:25 pace for 50 miles of roads and trails. Hard to imagine. Jim will race again in a couple weeks at the North Face Endurance Challenge 50 miler in San Francisco. He’ll face a top field, but it might not matter much.
This profile on Charlie Engle caught my attention with the report on the latest crazy race from the Barkley Marathon organizers. In this torture-fest, the entrants have to a 4.2 mile loop every hour until only one runner remains. The winner ran 28 loops.

This annual 5 miler is on Thanksgiving morning. The familiar course starts and finishes at Auditorium Shores. Expect thousands of participants at one of the biggest races in Austin. Now you can justify that extra slice of pumpkin pie! The main race starts at 9am.
